VSBA Inner North Bundle – School Redevelopments

The Victorian Government has committed to opening 100 new schools by 2026. The new schools will accommodate 85,000 to 95,000 students, ensuring all families have access to a great local school.

Alphington Primary School

Alphington Primary School is being upgraded to ensure it can meet future local enrolment growth. The school is located on a small site with a mix of building types, some of which are heritage buildings, with limited open space.

On completion Alphington Primary will see an increase in capacity from 500 to 700, with students getting a new competition-grade gymnasium, music room and three-level General Learning Building, completed in December 2021.  An additional project ALPH_02 was approved to for a new two-level Administration & Library building, commencing in November 2021.

Fairfield Primary School

Fairfield Primary also increases capacity to 700, with a two-level General Learning Building constructed on a newly acquired site across the road from the main school campus, plus refurbishment of the existing heritage Administration building and classrooms. Completed in April 2021.

Preston High School Stage 2A

Following substantial refurbishment and modernisation works, the former Preston Girls High re-opened as the new co-educational Preston High in 2019. The now completed Stage 2 works incorporates a new multi-sport gymnasium, change rooms, food technology facility, commercial kitchen and canteen. The old gymnasium has been refurbished with reception, conference and administration areas.  In August 2022 an additional project Stage 2B was approved to undertake development of the old Gym for the creation of a new mezzanine floor accommodating the library and administration facilities, plus teaching spaces including two performance theatres.

Our role

Ontoit is providing project management and Superintendent services for the projects. Work commenced at varying stages within the Department’s project management framework – Alphington Primary at schematic design; Fairfield Primary at contract documentation; and Preston High (Stage 2) at contract administration stage.  Alphington 2 added design and project management from inception.  Preston Stage 2B was commenced at contract documentation phase.

The expansion projects required careful planning and development, ensuring functionality and quality of the existing buildings, while maximising outdoor play and learning opportunities.
